The Text of Verna Roe's Speach Given at the Ceremony, 15 Sep 2007

Pvt. Phineas Parker was born July 2, 1757 in Mansfield, Windham County, Conn., the son of Ephraim and Deborah (Sargeant) Parker.

On the 9th day of Sept. 1776 at age 19, he entered the service in a Company of Militiamen at Windham County, Conn. in Colonel Experience Storr's regiment. They marched by way of Mansfield, Coventry, New Haven and Stamford to East Chester, New York; then on to New York Island where they were stationed near Fort Washington for 2 or 3 weeks, then they crossed Kingsbridge and marched to Westchester; the on to White Plains, and they were there at the time of the battle and it was there that he saw General Washington and General Sullivan. From White Plains he marched to a place called Northcastle where he was discharged on the 11th day of December and returned home to Windham County, making this term of service 3 months and 2 days. He was drafted in the militia and served 2 months under Captain Wayles, stationed at New London, Conn. About July 4, 1780, he enlisted in Captain James Dana's Company, attached to Colonel Levi Well's regiment, stationed at New London and West Haven and was discharged March l, 1781. He was at the burning of New London 2 days under Captain Eleazar Huntington.

After the war he lived 10 or 12 years in Mansfield, Conn. where he married Lois Southworth on March 28, 1782. Phineas and Lois had 6 children born in Mansfield, Conn.: Fanny, Alexander, Polly, Clary, Anna and Luther. The family then moved to Utica, New York, where they lived about nineteen years and had 5 more children: Ephriam, Deborah, Ozias, Asel and Avaline. About 1825, the family except Fanny, who was married and lived in Lewis County, moved to Pulteney, Steuben County, New York, where Lois died in 1838 at the age of 72 and
Phineas died Oct. 26, 1846 at the age of 89 years.

ADDED NOTES:

Parker Hill Road is just east of the cemetery.

It was Phineas Parker's marriage to Lois Southworth that gave us the Southworth lineage connection to Priscilla Mullins, wife of John Alden and the Mayflower Society.

The following list is from a Reading by S. Daggett & James Hope in 1980 and the Steuben County records combined.
