Daniel C. Colvin By Paul F. Giometti
My great grandfather Daniel C. Colvin was a resident of four of the six PHGS counties. He was born at Spring Mills, Independence, Allegany Co., NY October 20, 1835 to Gaylord Griswold and Ruth Hiltz Colvin. The Colvin family moved to Bingham, Potter County, PA, along with a neighbor Lyman BENNETT and his family in the 1840s. Apparently, Dan had become acquainted with Lyman’s daughter Annis L. BENNETT, so when the BENNETT family moved to Persia, Cattaraugus Co., NY in the 1850s, Dan followed Annis and they were married there January 24, 1857.
Dan and Annis took up residence on a farm in Persia and had two children Julia E., November 23, 1858 and James L., October 24, 1859. Annis Died on October 14, 1867 and was buried in the Broadway Road Cemetery, Gowanda, Cattaraugus Co.
In Wellsville, Allegany Co. on June 30, 1868 Dan married Annis’s cousin Florence A. BENNETT. Florence was the daughter of Aaron Franklin and Anna Barton BENNETT and born on November 23, 1850 in Owego, Tioga Co., NY. Aaron and Lyman were sons of Aaron and Elizabeth Bennett. Dan and Florence had the following children: Albert, May 28, 1869 in Persia; Bert, December 10, 1870 in Persia; Rose Ann, January 24, 1871 in Persia; Fred, April 28, 1873 in Elmira, NY; Cora M., September 24, 1875 in Elmira, NY and Franklin G., April 21 1877 in Woodhull, NY. Sometime in the 1870s Dan and Florence purchased and moved to the Walker farm near Borden, Woodhull, Steuben Co., NY. Florence died there on June 4, 1878 and was first buried at Borden and then moved to the Colvin family plot in the Fairview Cemetery, Osceola, Tioga Co., PA.
In Woodhull, Steuben Co., NY, Dan married Wealthy A. Bly daughter of Stephen T. and Elizabeth B. Andrews BLY. She was born in Greene, Chenango Co., NY, December 7, 1842 and the widow of James M. STEWART of Woodhull. They had one child: Adelbert John, my grandfather, on the Borden farm on November 20, 1881.
Dan died July 23, 1907 from a head wound resulting from a beam falling on him in the cow barn at the Borden farm. He was buried with his second wife in the Colvin family plot in Osceola. Wealthy died July 31, 1910 on the Borden farm and was buried next to her first husband in the Stewart Cemetery on Owlville Road, Woodhull, NY.
Dan’s diary tells of selling tubs of butter to E & D Colvin in Woodhull, gathering barrels prior to the apple harvest and the subsequent sorting, grading and delivery of apples afterwards. Since Adelbert lived his life on the same farm, I remember during visits, seeing a rusting blacksmith shop which Dan had built and the large apple orchards.
