I am now researching my father's family links, for the "Pierce" surname. I am of known Native American heritage on my mother's side; a recent autosomal DNA test (which I took with the hopes I'd learn more about all of my possible ancestry) results show a high degree of Native American ancestry. This rating has since been verified and cross-referenced using other analytic products. Since receiving these results, I have looked again at my father's last documented locale for his great-grandfather - in Steuben County, New York.
He would not have suspected a Native American ancestry. Our family "oral tradition" never included stories of Indian heritage.
We know that a Pierce, born in Steuben County, New York, moved back from Illinois to Steuben County to die in 1867 for unknown reasons, leaving his wife and sons (one being my father's grandfather) on a farm in Hebron. I am able to verify through the Census information this much. Otherwise, the records are terrible. But the surname is Pierce, and the name Frank Pierce appears many times in our family lines, with his grandfather changing his name from Carroll back to Frank. That information was provided by his father, and verifiable in the Census records as well.
My link is http://www.familyheritageresearchcommunity.org, where a photograph of my father may be found on a tab related to his (later) Eastern Shore, Maryland family history.
I'll accept any Pierce family leads related to Steuben County in the 1800s at mrundqui@yahoo.com.

- My name is David B. Stanton, born in Avon, NY, and spent my growing up years in Steuben County (Wayland). I am currently President of the Thomas Stanton Society. He is our ancestor b. 1616 and co founder of Stonington CT and Hartford CT. Many T. Stanton descendants live in Western NY and in Steuben County. For background on Thomas and our group check our website: stantonsociety.org. We are not exactly a genealogical society but more a family group connected by a common ancestor. I would appreciate you making our existence known to your group since many could be descended from Thomas.
- Chatauqua County Building Histories
We have web pages with the county historian for old structures in Chautauqua county. The idea is to have photos and histories of houses, schools, churches, etc., dating to the
19th century. The histories are often detailed, dealing with settlement, deeds, and people. There is a great deal of biographical material in all those pages. There are over 1800 structures listed--and growing--contributed by a score or more of people working on the project.

- Col ( Gen ) John Taylor or George Washington Taylor
Col (Gen) John Taylor moved to Steuben in 1797 {recorded in the 'Centenial History of Bath' }. Having served as commanding officer of the 4th Hunterdon Militia NJ, he like many others found after the war that their debts incurred in supporting their men in the field were called due, and with the loss of value of the Continental currency, were forced to sell everything they owned to pay off the debts. Faced with mounting debts, and left with no more possessions to sell, Col. Taylor left his home and moved north to Steuben with two of his children. Shortly after arriving, he married Mary Miller Lindsley, widow of a fellow NJ Militia officer, and lived in Lindley until her death in 1806. Although his grave or circumstances of his death are unknown, an obituary in the Geneva Gazette of 25 Dec 1811, gives his date of death as 4 Dec 1811 and a location as 'probably in Bath'. The two children who moved to NY with him lived in or near Bath at the time. They were Elizabeth Ann {Taylor} Cameron, wife of Dugald Cameron, agent for the Pultney Estate, and George Washington Taylor who married Elizabeth Christina Clement, grand-daughter of Henry A Townsend. George was a noted merchant, and at least two of his sons, Nathaniel Carr Taylor, and William Boyd Taylor, both of Canisteo followed in his footsteps. George and Elizabeth had 12 children, many of whom are buried in Hillside Cemetery near Canisteo.

- I am happy to announce that, after over 30 years of research and 6 years of writing, the narrative family history of the Waxham surname (416 pp. hardcover) has now been published. Although it traces the family from medieval England through emigration to the U.S. in the 1830s followed by wide scattering from coast to coast, much of the action takes place in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. Other surnames followed extensively include Post and Tuttle in Chautauqua County and Bullock and Young in Cattaraugus County.
