|Dr. Samuel Frederick Ziegler, 96y, of 75 Crooker House Lane, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born March 3, 1914, at his home on Garlock Hollow in Bradford, he was the son of Christian and Mary Amanda Magee Zeigler. On August 5, 1943, in Fort Dix, N.J. he married Beverly Yancey, who died on April 15, 2000.
He was a 1932 graduate of Bradford High School and later from Allegheny College and graduated first in his class in 1937 from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. He then returned to Bradford and started his dental practice.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 22, 1942, and served as a medic during World War II. He was at the Normandy Invasion, Northern France, the Hurtgen Forest, Andennes, Rhineland and Western Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Silver Star. He was honorably discharged December 21, 1945 and returned to Bradford to resume his practice. He continued his practice of the highest caliber of prosthetic dentistry for 46 more years from 1945 until his retirement in 1991. He enjoyed his retired years with continual family involvement, outdoor hobbies and home management projects until his last day.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, The Pennsylvania Dental Association and the U.S. Dental Association and served on the Bradford School Board in the 1960's. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
Dr. Zeigler is survived by a daughter, Kathy Herzog of Bradford; a son, Joel (Patricia Hill-Zeigler) C. Zeigler of Amesbury, MA; and one grand-daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Zeigler.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Louise Zeigler on April 28, 1963; a son, Samuel F. Zeigler Jr., on October 23, 2003; a grandson, Robert Samuel Herzog on February 27, 2002; one sister, Essie Anderson; and two brothers, Frank Zeigler and Russell Zeigler.
Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life at noon on Saturday in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc., South Avenue. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Robert Samuel Herzog Scholarship Fund at the University of Pittsburg at Bradford; or Robert Samuel Herzog Memorial Fund at the Bradford Hospital Foundation; or a charity of the donor's choice.
