James W. Sargent, 91y, formerly of 9 Edgewood Road, Bradford PA, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at The Pavilion at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born October 19, 1918 in Winslow, IN, he was the son of the late James H. & Mae Sargent. On February 22, 1941, in Bradford, he married Josephine A. Zurat, who died on April 26, 2001.
He and his wife would walk the tall hills of the Black Forest for deer, a squirrel, or just to enjoy a sunny day. Many days and nights were spent on the Allegheny Reservoir. He taught his children and grandchildren to respect the outdoors and marksmanship.
Mr. Sargent attended Bradford area schools. He grew up during the depression hunting the woods around Hedgehog Lane to provide for his family.
He joined the Army in May of 1941 under General Patton. He was a member of the 10th Armored Division's 90th Cav. Recon. Tank Squad, which fought their way across Europe. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bonze Star and France awarded him the Croix de Guere. He never spoke about his exploits of war, but was a proud and patriotic American who believed in the power of rugged individualist.
Surviving is one son, Robert J. Sargent of Foristell, MO; one sister Lois Carmen of Bradford, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one daughter, Jo Ann Colosimo.
Family will be receiving friends on Saturday in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. East Main Street, from 10 a.m. to noon, at which time funeral and committal s ervices will be held with the Rev. David Bunnell, Pastor of the Hill Memorial United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.
Memorial, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society, McKean Co. Unit, P.O. Box 67, Bradford, Pa 16701; or McKean County SPCA, P.O. Box 113, Bradford, Pa 16701.
