OLEAN — Francis C. Freaney, of Olean-Hinsdale Road, Olean, passed away Tuesday (May 4, 2010) in Olean General Hospital after a long illness.
Born Nov. 26, 1916, in Olean, he was the son of the late Richard James and Anne O’Neill Freaney.
In 1943, he married Ruth Carol Johnston of Clearfield, Pa., who predeceased him Sept. 26, 1979. On Nov. 22, 1981, he married Edith Lawton, who survives.
Bud graduated from Olean High School in 1934 before entering the military.
He worked for Secony Vacuum. During World War II, he served in the United States Army from September 1940 through November 1945. He attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge First Award, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Sharpshooter Badge with Carbine Bar, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.
After WWII, he worked for Daystrom Corp. for 20 years. He then worked for ACME Electric Corp. for 19 1/2 years in Cuba, Hinsdale and Allegany, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Cuba Lodge 306 F & AM, the Hinsdale Legion Post 1434, the VFW of Cuba Post 2721, member of the Hinsdale Guys and Gals and former member of the Birch Run Country Club. He loved to golf and was an avid reader.
Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters, Anne Harrington of New Jersey, Kathryn Ellis of Florida, and Sheila Freaney of Florida; two sons, Mark (Darla) Freaney of Olean, and Eric Freaney of Allegany; and several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Sue Freaney of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Gail; and four brothers, Richard, Robert, Terrance and Gerald Freaney; and a sister, Eleanor Lyman.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday. Father Gregory Dobson, pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olean.
Memorials may be made to the Cuba Masonic Lodge No. 306 F & AM, Hinsdale American Legion, Olean Public Library or the Hinsdale Fire Department Ambulance Fund. The Cuba Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic service at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
