Leo Anthony Smith, Jr.
OLEAN - Leo Anthony Smith Jr., of 1207 Spruce St., passed away Monday (May 3, 2010) at the Erie county Medical Center in Buffalo, after a brief illness.
Born July 10, 1926, in Olean, he was the son of the Late Leo A. and Martha Kukulka Smucinski (Smith), On Nov. 27, 1946, in St. John's Church, he married the former Eileen M. McxCartan, who survives
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1943 and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He received the Army of Occupation Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Leo worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Daystrom Corp., St. Bonaventure University and retired from the Olean School District in 1986.
He was a member and past president of CSEA, member of St. John's Church and was one of the first Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers in 1979 and was a member of the Pulaski Club, In his younger days, he played football for the Olean Indies. He enjoyed baseball, football and fishing and he especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving besides his wife are his children, Marcia (Norman) Phillips of Olean, David (Arden) Smith of Tampa, Fla., Douglas (Joyce) Smith, Dennis Smith, Daniel (Phyllis) Smith, Elaine Smith and Lorranine Smith, all of Olean; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Sally Smith; and a grandson, Peter Phillips.
There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday (May 5, 2010) at 1:30 P.M. in St. John's Church, Olean, with Father Edward Sheedy, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
