George R. "Babe" Gibbons
Olean - George R.. "Babe" Gibbons of 1105 N. Union St. passed away Friday (July 24, 2009) in the Olean General Hospital.
Born May 8, 1916 in Olean, He was a son of the late John and Margaret Blackall Gibbons. On September 30, 1941 in Holy Cross Church , Salamanca, he married the former Christine M. "Tina" Matusik, who predeceased him on Jan 25, 2008.
A lifetime resident of Olean, he was a graduate of Olean High School, and was employed at Dresser Rand for 43 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of St. Joh's Church, Local 4601 Steelworkers Retirees Association, life member of both the Pulaski Club and the St. Stephen;s Club and a member of Loyal Order of the Moose 119.
In his younger years he played fast pitch softball for Clark Brothers, the Moose Club and K of C. In George's later years he enjoyed watching hi favorite team, the New York Yankees, the Lawrence Welk Shows and playing cards.
Survivors include three daughters, Constance (Ron) Bennett of Spencerport, Rosemary Fowler and Kathleen A. Hanigan, both of Olean, a son, Geroge W.(Deborah) Gibbons of Olean eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sever nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife he was predeceased by two brothers, John and James Gibbons, and a sister, Mary Till.
The family will receive friends Monday (July 27, 2009) from 5 to 8 PM at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc 1303 E. State St., Olean. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday (July 28, 2009) at 10 AM in St. John's Church. Father Edward Sheedy, pastor, will be celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. Memorial may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Scripture wake service will be held in the funeral home Monday evening at 7 PM.
