Presidents, Soldiers, Statesmen H.H. Hardesty Pub. 1892. Clark S. Wells
was born Oct 30, 1814 in Westerly, Washington Co. RI, and settled in
McKean Co. PA. in 1858: his parents, Joseph and Lydia (Maxon) Wells, are
deceased. Jan 28, 1839, he was married in Genesee, Allegany Co. NY, to
Esther Lanphere, born in Almond, NY June 19, 1819.; Her parents, George
and Hannah (Haskins) Lanphere, are deceased. To this union the following
children have been born, Edgar W., who served in the late war in Co. I, 1st
PA. Rifles (Bucktails), and whose record will be found in this volume: Laura
B., Manton S., and WilliamE.. Comrade Wells enlisted Aug 15, 1862 from
Harrisburg, PA., at the age of 47, as 1st Sergt. in Co. G, 150th PA. V.
(Bucktails) Inf., 2nd Brig., 3d Div., 1st A. C. September 1862 in Washington
, DC he was injured by a fall breaking several ribs. In the fall of 1862, at
Washington , DC he was detailed as Regtl. wagonmaster for about ten days.
In the spring of 1863 he was in hospital at Bell Plains, VA, about three
weeks with inflammatory rheumatism. In October , 1863, at Philadelphia., he
was furloughed for thirty days and returned to Philadelphia at expiration of
smae. In the winter of the same year he was again furloughed for thirty days
at Washington, DC, rejoining his regiment at Belle Plaines, VA. He took part
in the battles of Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, and scouting, skirmishing,
guard and garrison duty; and received his honorable discharge Dec 22, 1863,
from Convalescent Camp. His father, Joseph Wells, served in the War of
1812. Comrade Wells belongs to Wessell Post, No 185, in which he is J. V.
C.; he has been overseer of the poor for Ceres, McKean Co. PA., is engaged
in farming , and his address is Olean, Cattaraugus Co. NY
