Virginia C. Kallenborn, 95, of 203 N. Main Street, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at her residence.
She was born February 1, 1912 in Tarentum, a daughter of Harry and Ida Steel Crytzer. On November 23, 1932, she married John Kallenborn, who died May 5, 2005.
Mrs. Kallenborn was a graduate of Tarentum High School, and she attended Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. She moved to Port Allegany with her husband and sons in 1946, and relocated to Murrysville in 1962. In Novermber 2003, she and her husband returned to Port Allegany.
Mrs. Kallenborn worked as a public relations director for Ketchum, McLeod and Grove in Pittsburgh, and she was editor of the Monroeville Times Express. While living in Port Allegany, she was the Pennsylvania bureau chief for the Olean Times Herald. She also presented a daily newscast of local news and events known as "Port Parade" on WFRM, Coudersport. In 1973 she started her own real estate business, "Murry East", in Murrysville, and she also taught real estate courses at local Penn State University campuses.
Mrs. Kallenborn was a friend to Eliot Ness and his wife; she was recognized for helping to promote his book, "The Untouchables".
She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany, and she later became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Murrysville. She was a Republican Committee woman for McKean County, president of the McKean County Republican Women, a former member of Port Allegany Woman's Club, the director of Port Allegany Youth Counselors, chairman of the Community Chest, a member of the Executive Committee of the Tri-County Area Girl Scouts Council and a member of the McKean County Artistic Society. She was also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors, and she was a 77-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Tarentum and New Kensington.
Surviving are two sons, John David (Nancy) Kallenborn of Horseheads, N.Y. and Richard L. (Mararet) Kallenborn of Port Allegany; a grand-daughter, Kim (Joe) Katsur of Wayland, N.Y.; three grandsons, John Richard (Mary) Kallenborn of Elmira, N.Y. and Michael (Trisha) Kallenborn and James (Leslie) Kallenborn, both of Port Allegany; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Kallenborn, Derek Kallenborn, Nicole Katsur, Jessica Kallenborn and Kellie Kallenborn.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert Kallenborn; two great grandsons, Joseph Katsur and James Katsur; two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm Saturday at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 105 N. Main Street, Port Allegany, where funeral and committal services will be held at 2 pm Sunday. The Rev. Randall Headley, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Port Allegany, will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany, the S. W. Smith Library, Port Allegany or to a charity of the donor's choice.
