Olean, N.Y. - John W. Gibbons, loving husband, father and grandfather, of 422 Alder St., Olean, passed away Monday (April 26, 2010) in the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, of complications following surgery.
Born Feb. 2, 1942 in Olean, he was the son of the late John W. and Mary Harenda Gibbons. On Sept. 18, 1965 in St. Johnís Church, Olean, he married the former Sharon L. Flint, who survives.
John graduated from Olean High School, Class of 1960,
served in the U.S. Army Reserves obtaining the rank of Platoon Sargent. John had a 37 year career with the Olean Fire Department, starting as a firefighter in 1963. He was promoted to captain in 1975 and appointed to fire chief in 1987, retiring in 2000. He was a lifelong member of St. Johnís Church, Olean.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Greg (Kathleen) Gibbons and Shawn (Sabrina) Gibbons, both of Olean; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, Samantha, Alexis, Jolyn and Emily; a sister, Mary Jane (Thomas) Wilson; a brother, Gerald (Diane) Gibbons, both of Rochester; many nieces, nephews, cousins, sister and brother-in-laws, an aunt, uncle and a special cousin, Paula Lafferty, Olean.
He was predeceased by a son, John W. Gibbons, IV on July 20, 2008.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 East State St., Olean. Funeral services will take place, beginning with a prayer service, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Johnís Church. Father Edward Sheedy, pastor, will be celebrant.
Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
Memorial may be made to St. Johnís Church, Olean, or the American Cancer Society.
