RICHMOND, VA - Joyce MacDonald Zwirnbaum of Richmond died Dec. 11, 2009, in Richmond.

She was the daughter of the late Harry and Pearl MacDonald of Shinglehouse, PA, and was married to Abraham Marcus Zwirnbaum, who predeceased her.

Mrs. Zwirnbaum worked at Bell Helicopter Co. during World War II. After her marriage, she and her husband Max lived in Luzon, Philippines, while he served as a U.S. military advisor to the Philippine National Army. Their lives there were eventful, with their home frequently under fire from the Hukbalahap rebels. They also had an occasional python to deal with.

They then moved to Postwar Japan when Mr. Zwirnbaum was assigned to the first contingent of the U.S. military to counter the North Korean, then Chinese drive toward South Korea. Mrs. Zwirnbaum managed the American Red Cross station there.

In the 1950s they returned to the United States and she was employed in retail sales in Buffalo, NY. Later, she worked as a hostess at Paul's Steak House in Olean, NY. In the 1960s, she and her husband moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as manager of several hair salons.

Mrs. Zwirnbaum had the honor of serving as worthy matron of Eureka Chapter 530 Order of the Eastern Star in Shinglehouse.

Surviving are two sons, Rick Dean (Patricia) Zwirnbaum of Springfield, VA, and Jeffrey Scott (Dianna) Zwirnbaum of Anaheim, CA; grandchildren, Mark, Joyce, Barbara, Kristine and Katrina; and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jeffrey Jr., Jonathan, Mateo, Catherine, Caroline, Xochilt, Connor, Joseph and Madisen.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Fort Myer Base Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
Arrangements are under direction of the Robert J. Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington.
