3/17/2005 - Catherine Barone ''Kay'' Palermo, 100, formerly of 158 Euclid Ave., died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday (March 16, 2005) in the Heritage Green Health Care Center. An area resident most of her life, she was born May 12, 1904, in Fredonia, the daughter of Frank and Mary Cosimano Barone.
She had attended Jamestown Public Schools and prior to retirement was employed as a sales clerk by the former Marcus Co., the former Kraus Pharmacy, the former Zuckerman's Ladies Apparel and the former Polly's Women's Clothing Store. She was a longtime active member of the St. John Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Bishops Committee, the Catholic Daughters of America,and the Altar and Rosary Society of St. John. She did baking and worked for the St. Joseph's Table and the Italian Festival. She also spent many hours crocheting many afghans and slippers, which were donated to these special church events. She also was a volunteer at the former Jamestown General Hospital and the Lutheran Retirement Home.
Catherine had enjoyed her many hours playing bridge with the same group of friends for more than 60 years. Her family will remember her as one who was fond of people, was thoughtful of others and loved to bake treats for her many friends and family.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Patricia Barone Hurtack, who took care of her affairs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cosmo Palermo, whom she married June 12, 1923, in St. James Catholic Church, and who died Feb. 26, 1958; a son, Cosmo C. Palermo, who died July 22, 1999; two sisters: Elizabeth Conrad and Josephine Chionchio; and five brothers: Charles, Anthony, Dr. Michael, John and Dr. Andrew Barone.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. Joseph Gullo, pastor of St. John Catholic Church and Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church.
Memorials may be made to St. John Catholic Church, 270 Newton Ave., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701.
