Howard SMITH

3/17/2005 - Howard A. Smith, 70, of 114 Wilson Place, died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday (March 15, 2005) in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, he was born April 21, 1934, in Jamestown, the son of Paul D. and Lena Scofield Smith Sr.
He was a 1952 graduate of Jamestown High School, Jamestown Community College and he attended the State University at Buffalo. Prior to retirement in 1997, he was employed by Cummins Engine, where he was a member of its EMT Cadre. In earlier years, he had been employed by the former Dibble Pontiac for many years. He was a life member of Christ First United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. He served as president of the Ross Mills Cemetery Association, member of the Chautauqua County Simulation Team, taught CPR and first aid for many years for the American Red Cross ,and in later years drove for the bloodmobile shuttle service.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose family was the most important part of his life. He was very close to his daughters-in-law, Kay, Becky and Karen. He loved to travel, spending winters with his family in the south. He enjoyed camping with his children and grandchildren, and was always a generous teacher. He was a humanitarian for local residents.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Esther Winton Smith, whom he married April 9, 1955, in Sinclairville Baptist Church; three sons: Bradley A. Smith of Columbus, Ind., Phillip H. Smith of Rock Hill, S.C., and David A. Smith of Loganville, Ga.; and five grandchildren: Christopher A. and Alexei J. Smith, both of Columbus, Steven D. Smith of Hope, Ind., and Cameron A. and Heather A. Smith, both of Loganville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul D. Smith Jr.
The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Christ First United Methodist Church. The Rev Douglas M. Knopp, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Christ First United Methodist Church, 663 Lakeview Ave., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701; or the James Prendergast Library Association, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701.
