CUBA — Edward L. “Ted” Sleggs, of 9131 Bump Road, Cuba, passed away Thursday (Feb. 21, 2013) at Cuba Memorial Hospital in the long-term care unit, where he had been a resident for the past three years.

His family appreciates the quality and compassionate care he received during his time there.

Born Jan. 20, 1931, in Ossian, he was a son of Howard and Rachael Pickard Sleggs. In 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Ludwig, who survives.

Ted worked in the dairy industry for more than 50 years, including Crowley Foods in Arkport and Cuba Cheese and Great Lakes Cheese, both in Cuba, retiring in 1997.

Ted was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a talented baseball pitcher and an excellent marksman — he could shoot dimes out of the air with a .22. He also enjoyed bowling and horse racing. His favorite activity was watching his grandchildren play sports from his truck, smoking a cigar and listening to the radio. His positive attitude, love for his family and sense of humor will be sorely missed.

Surviving, besides his loving wife of 63 years, are three daughters, Lynne (Burbank) Mitchell of Watertown, and Shelly (Mike) Williamson and Sandy (Dwayne) Hughes, both of Cuba; a son, John (Sandra) Sleggs of Cuba; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tony Sleggs.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, 9 Bull St., Cuba.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Palliative Care Program at Cuba Memorial Hospital, 140 W. Main St., Cuba, NY 14727; or to the Cuba Little League, P.O. Box, 265, Cuba, NY 14727.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to www.rinkerfuneralhome.com.
