ALFRED STATION — Jean Ellis Smith Vockovic, 92, of 864 Route 244, passed away to be with her Lord in Heaven, Wednesday (Feb. 20, 2013) at her home.
Jean was born in Hornell, Aug. 6, 1920, the daughter of Deo and Jennie Wheeler Ellis.
She grew up “next door” to the Hope and Rural Cemetery, where her parents were caretakers from 1920 to 1957, when at that time, her brother, Howard, was appointed caretaker, a job he had until retirement in 1983. They were known for their love of the cemeteries and with family pride and respect, kept the cemeteries beautifully maintained for 63 years.
She graduated from Hornell High School in 1938 with wonderful memories of the music department and her chorus years. She developed friendships that became life long.
In 1939, Jean married Frank Gale Smith.
a railroad employee, and became part of the Great Erie Railroad Family, fondly remembered by all who were part of it. She was a true Hornell Person who loved her home town. She was a talented seamstress who made clothes for her family and herself. She kept busy knitting, reading and singing to her music collection and enjoying her many friends. She had a sharp wit and loved to laugh. Jean liked people and people liked Jean.
She married Mike Vockovic in 1957.
They settled in the hills of Alfred Station with deer walking across the back yard and wonderful neighbors she liked waving to.
Jean was predeceased by her parents; brother Raymond Ellis in 1972, brother Howard Ellis in 2008, husband Frank Smith in 1953 and husband Mike Vockovic in 1993 and other family and friends, including Virginia Crooks, Charlotte Waight, Louise Ryan, Bertha Guthrie, and Marie Falzarano.
One can only imagine Heaven with a great reunion.
She is survived by her four children living in the area to provide help and comfort when suddenly alone; daughters, Carol Kull and Sharon Quintos, sons Frank J.(Ledorna Monahan) Smith and Daniel R. (Julie Henry) Smith. Eleven grandchildren, and great grandchildren, special friend Mary Jane Reid and dear sister-in-law and friend, Virginia Luvae Ellis.
