The house pictured on Eleven Mile was built by Claudia Jean Bentley Haberkorn's great grandfather Nichols. The Bentley Home was built in Kibbeville. There is a picture of Willis and Ida Bentley sitting on the porch of that home. It was in this house at Kibbeville that all the Bentley children were born.  The Bentley Home burned in early 1900 and they went to live at the Nichols home which has ever since been known as the Bentley home. the house at Kibbeville caught fire and burned to the ground while the Bentleys were in Shinglehouse for the day. They were never able to determine just what caused the fire.

The Nichols and Bentleys were staunch Seventh Day Adventist and as they were the only ones of that religion in the surrounding area, they had to go to Shinglehouse to church. In the summer, that was probably a nice Saturday drive.  Back in the early 1900's, the roads were not great. Getting to Shinglehouse from Eleven Mile in the winter must have been quite a struggle for the two families. Because they used oxen for traveling, the trip would have been long and slow.

Ida and William Bentley were the daughter and son in law of the Nichols. They were among the pioneer settlers of the Eleven Mile and Kibbeville. Back in those days Kibbeville had a school, and even had a post office which was inside the grocery store.
