PHGS News Letter for February 2007

Hello Members,

Welcome to the PHGS News Letter for February 2007. Painted Hills Genealogy Society has seen a few changes in the past few months. We changed over from the old Query and Obit boards to the new Forum Boards. The transition seemed to go fairly easy with little complications. We also got a new Guest book installed that makes it easier to delete the spam type messages.

As some of you are aware we also tried out a new front page. After receiving several negative feedbacks we decided to change it back to the previous version. We try to make everything easier for our members and welcome such feedback. With it we are able to keep our site simple and complete to the best of our ability.

Our Treasurer Wendy has a new addition to her family. On Friday, September 15th, Annea Dahlin arrived at 11:55pm. She weighted 7 lbs. 6 oz.

POLISH VISIT- OCTOBER 8, 2006

I visited with the Golas family of Tychy, SW Poland.  Mrs. Eugenia (Ruszczyk) Golas had a nice luncheon for me of stuffed cabbage, crepes and apples and juice or water.  Her daughter Hanna (Golas) Loska her husband and daughter and son Henryk, Ewa and Pawel were there too.  Later, arrived Eugenia’s son, Antoni Golas also neatly attired in a blue and white shirt, Navy blue jacket and pants.  Eugenia’s sister ANNA Ruszczyk married my dad’s, Joseph G. Maciora (1921-1998) of Pittsfield, MA and aunt Johanna R. (Maciora) Fell (1908-2003) formerly of Bath, New York, first cousin, Faustyn Maciora (1907-1983) in 1930.  I learned from Antoni that Faustyn was a carpenter and

he built a home for his wife and himself once they were married and they had a large family of 14.  Nine Maciora babies survived into adulthood- this was near and during the years of WORLD WAR II (1939-1945) in northeastern Poland- the village of Charubin and province of Lomza.  This Golas family relocated to Tychy Silesia SW Poland with a promise of an apartment and factory job and so they left their farm in Charubin behind and started a successful new life.  Antoni frequently travels to Charubin perhaps once a month and knows Fasutyn’s sons:  Czeslaw, Jozef and Ryszard whom I met with Faustyn and Anna on August 5, 1980 but we spoke of early family rather then the present as in this trip.  Ryszard married in 1983 and has five daughters!  It was fascinating to learn all of this information though few other names were known.  One never knows where genealogical data will be found!

RESEARCH IN A FOREIGN LAND

One must get their facts from either USA birth, baptismal, marriage or death certificates or passenger ship lists or naturalization records to get the exact geographic location of an ancestor's place of origin.  Also old letters from relatives’ area huge help.  Much of the research in Poland is through church records in parish or diocesan archives.  Baptismal records are AKT CHRZTU, Marriage AKT SLUBU and Death and Burial records: AKT ZGONU. At various times the records are in Polish, Russian after 1863-1918, German post 1870-1918 and Galicia under Austrian rule so German from 1784-1918.  On November 11, 1918 Poland regained its independence after being divided or partioned by Russia, Austria, and Prussia in 1772, 1793 and 1795.  1795 saw Poland wiped off the European map for 123 years and Poles were dispersed throughout the world.  Many of these immigrants wanted money for food, religious freedom and political freedom from the detested Czar and Kaiser.  A better life was sought in the USA and Canada for themselves and their future generations.  Be prepared in foreign research, have basic language knowledge of the country, own a dictionary from whatever language to English.  Have a pen and paper for use.  Be patient and persevering!  Good luck.
